Young Curators Program
Young Curators Exhibition - Doodle? / March 5 - 19, 2010
SITE Santa Fe’s Young Curators is a weekly after-school program for high school students. The program’s primary goals are to encourage teenagers’ connection to contemporary art and provide a context for an exploration of the structure and production of exhibitions. During their hour-long meetings, the Young Curators learn the skills and procedures necessary for creating an exhibition including: determining the theme for the show; putting out a call for entries through the media; writing curatorial statements and press releases; choosing the artwork; and helping to install the exhibition.
Participating teens create exhibitions comprised of art by local, regional, and national artists between 13 and 21 years of age. Over the past nine years, exhibitions were held in respected venues such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Santa Fe, the Capitol Rotunda Gallery, the Santa Fe Art Institute, and the Harwood Art Center in Albuquerque. In October 2006, the Capitol Rotunda Gallery hosted Refined Palette: A Show of Color. In May 2008, The Young Curators presented their 14th exhibition, Catalyst, at the New Mexico Museum of Art. The show examined art that was inspired by and responded to a piece of writing such as a quote, a poem, or a book, and the exhibition included works in a variety of media including: painting, photography, drawing, graffiti, video, and installation pieces. Over 60 artists submitted their work for the Young Curators’ consideration and 25 were chosen for the exhibition.
SITE Santa Fe’s Young Curators and the Santa Fe Rotary Foundation for the Arts combined their efforts to promote youth and art in our community. In 2008, three scholarships were awarded to high school seniors from northern New Mexico committed to pursuing careers in the visual arts. One $2,500 scholarship and two $1,000 scholarships were awarded to artists chosen from the Catalyst exhibition.
In addition to organizing exhibitions, the Young Curators participate in a variety of art-related workshops. Over the last several years, the Young Curators have studied the methods and procedures for conservation and restoration of works on paper, paintings, sculpture, and frames. They have participated in workshops focused on historical oil gilding and frame-making, and contemporary forensic techniques used in painting conservation.
